Captain A.M. Steadley, Jr., 86, passed away peacefully and went to be with the Lord on March 30, 2021. A native of Oklahoma City, OK, he attended the University of Oklahoma (OU) as a member of the Phi Gamma Delta (Fiji
) Fraternity, graduating with a Bachelor Science in Petroleum Engineering in 1958. It was there that he met the love of his life, the former Miss Sarajane Bateman, a Pi Beta Phi. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy and they were married a year later.
He served his initial sea tour as the Deck Division Officer and an Officer of the Deck (OOD) onboard USS Randolph (CVA-15) based in Norfolk, VA. Upon completion of sea duty, he transferred to the Navy Civil Engineer Corps, serving initial tours at Naval Training Center, San Diego, CA and Construction Battalion Center (CBC), Port Hueneme, CA. He then deployed overseas as the Resident Officer in Charge of Construction (ROICC) at Naval Station, Subic Bay, Philippines, and Operations Officer then Executive Officer (XO) of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 133. During this time, he earned a Bronze Star (with Combat V
) for service in Vietnam. Returning to the U.S., he attended the Naval Postgraduate School and earned a Bachelor of Science in Material Management. He then reported to the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Headquarters in Washington, DC as the Director of Operations and Maintenance for Navy Family Housing. He deployed again OCONUS as the Resident Officer in Charge of Construction (ROICC) in Diego, Garcia BIOT, initiating strategic aviation base and facility construction projects. He returned from deployment to serve on the Navy Real Property Steering Group at the Chesapeake Division, NAVFAC, Washington, DC. He then served as the Seabee Division Head at NAVFAC Headquarters, and then Congressional Liaison at the Office of the Navy Comptroller.
He reported as the Commanding Officer of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) One based in Gulfport, MS. He then reported as the XO of Western Division, NAVFAC, San Bruno, CA. He served his final tour with the Seabees as Commanding Officer of CBC, Gulfport, MS and the 20th Naval Construction Regiment, where he was recognized as an Honorary Chief Petty Officer. He completed his naval career as the Deputy Director for Facilities and Construction on the staff of the Secretary of the Navy.
Upon Navy retirement, he joined the Engineering Management team at Walk Haydel and Associates based in New Orleans, LA, and also worked as an engineering consultant for FEMA.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Sarajane Bateman of Bartlesville, OK; sister, Kathryn (Jack), sons, Miller (wife: Lissa) and Scott (wife: Julie); six grandchildren, Ryan, Sean, Ethan, Sara, Katie, and Ben, and two great grandchildren, Indie Jane and Maya. He is pre-deceased by his brother, Raoul, sister, Jane Ann, and grandson, Andrew. Memorial services are scheduled for April 10, 2021 at 11:00 (ET) at the Word of Life Assembly in Springfield, VA, with future internment planned at Arlington National Cemetery.
